What will we learn?
In 2nd grade, the academic program will emphasize the following skills and concepts:
READING:
WRITTEN and ORAL LANGUAGE:
MATHEMATICS:
- Core sight vocabulary
- Developing extended comprehension skills through close reading (using evidence in text to draw conclusions)
- Developing study and reference skills
- Strengthening phonics skills
- Read a variety of literature such as tall tales, legends, fables, letters, informational articles and biographies
WRITTEN and ORAL LANGUAGE:
- Grammar and Spelling: Alphabetizing, Punctuation, Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs
- Writing across the curriculum, in a variety of genres, through informational paragraphs, stories, poems, letters, directions, and explanations
- Students will share their ideas and their writings orally with classmates in the form of four project presentations (see below)
MATHEMATICS:
- Addition and subtraction of two whole numbers up to three digits long
- Order and compare whole numbers to 1,000 by using symbols (<, >, =)
- Multiplication tables of 2s, 5s, and 10s (to "times 10") and commit them to memory
- Knowledge of math facts in order to perform computation
- Demonstrate understanding of key math concepts by writing and speaking
- Place value, telling time, geometry, money, fractions and decimals
